When the last child leaves the nest, it can feel both daunting and exhilarating. For me, that transition opened the door to rediscovering a part of myself I had long set aside — my creativity. While my role as a mother evolved, I began a new journey as an artist, channeling emotion and imagination into every brushstroke.
Many years ago, my first artistic adventures were in oil painting. But as a mom raising four children, finding uninterrupted time to paint was a challenge. Between busy schedules and little hands eager to join in, creativity on canvas often took a backseat.
Eventually, I discovered acrylics — a perfect fit for my life at the time. The quick-drying paint meant I could complete a piece before curious fingers found their way to it! Learning the new medium and embracing its vibrant palette took practice, but it reignited my passion.
Later, I experimented with acrylic ink, drawn to their fluidity and depth. I began adding caulk to my paintings for texture and dimension — a playful technique that felt ahead of its time. Today’s modeling mediums may make this process easier, but I still smile knowing I was creating that layered look long before it was popular.
A few years ago, my daughter encouraged me to explore watercolor. I was hesitant — watercolor is notoriously tricky, demanding patience and precision. The balance of water, pigment, and light left little room for error, and I wasn’t sure I had the energy for that kind of discipline.
But curiosity won. As I researched the medium, I stumbled upon gouache — a medium with the rich opacity of acrylics and the softness of watercolor. It was love at first brushstroke. Gouache allowed me to blend the best of both worlds: layering, detail, and expressive color. I ordered my first set, and as they say, the rest is history.
Take a moment to explore my gallery of works — from acrylics and acrylic inks to gouache. Each painting represents a chapter in my creative journey, a step forward in rediscovering the joy of making art.
Check out my calendar of upcoming shows, and come see my work in person. I’d love to meet you, hear which pieces speak to you, and maybe even take suggestions for what I should paint next.
See you there!
